About the project

The old well-known corner building was very tired and was an eyesore. In collaboration with the architectural firm SUM, the aim was to set up a project that, in contrast to the old building, could become a landmark in Ghent.

The project consisted of completely stripping the building and reintegrating it into the urban fabric. On the ground floor and the first two floors, a double-height retail space with mezzanine has been created, above which 9 apartments have been created.

The aim was to fit the project seamlessly into the existing urban context. That is why a subtle architecture was proposed, which did not shrug but sought to connect with its neighbours.

The existing facade rhythm was retained and extended to the ground floor. In the new, more efficient facade, the former vertical structure is also clearly preserved, albeit in a contemporary design language. In addition to an aesthetic and insulating function, the vertical fins also have an important signaling function. The internal light fixtures emphasize this vertical facade structure. On the corner of Kortedagsteeg and Vogelmarkt, the building was transformed more radically. The street corner was straightened into a new head volume. With the right angle we realized a full facade on both the Vogelmarkt and the Kortedagsteeg. Here the glass mass of the building was broken through by the balconies and the retail volume was extended on the lower floors.
