About the project
Synchroon has acquired the SITA office on Heathrowstraat in Amsterdam to develop an All-in-one school and 190 homes here: Floating Gardens. Together with the municipality of Amsterdam, it has made plans to achieve an integrated development with a school in the plinth and 190 apartments above it. The design for Floating Gardens was created by Orange Architects.
The area around Sloterdijk station is rapidly transforming from an office location to a mixed living and working area. Sloterdijk-Centrum will be the heart of a large-scale area development: Port-City.
Floating Gardens is an iconic building that gives Sloterdijk a face to the Haarlemmerweg. With the arrival of this all-in-one school, we will strengthen Sloterdijk Centrum as a mixed living and working area. Given its location on the Brettenscheg, extra attention was paid in the project to the landscape integration of the plan and the roof landscape of Floating Gardens.
The All-in-one school consists of a primary school for 17 groups. There is room for about 400 children, a nursery and before and after school care. The school is located in the first two floors of the building. The cooperation between the various parts of the All-in-one school creates a broad learning and living environment in leisure and at school, with the aim of maximizing development opportunities for all children. Extra attention has been paid to green outdoor spaces and roof gardens to promote biodiversity in the city and the well-being of residents.
The total of 190 apartments of Floating Gardens are located on the third to the 17th floor and consist of 50% mid-market rental housing and 50% private sector housing. This makes this location affordable for a large group.
Floating Gardens is a task with a mix of functions. The project fits in perfectly with Synchroon's mission: to create beautiful buildings and environments that have lasting value for the city.
