About the project
New York’s West Village is rich in timeless townhouses and prewar cooperatives, but new condominiums are few and far between, perhaps because of the design and height restrictions imposed by the Greenwich Village Historic District. Indeed, it took four tries for Minskoff Equities’ residential development at 17 Jane Street to earn the approval of the Landmarks Preservation Commission.
David Chipperfield Architects, designer of The Bryant and the Rolex Building, was undaunted, revising the project to meet commissioners’ demands and drawing inspiration from pre-war residential buildings nearby. Renderings show a red brick building with precast panels, a precast cornice running the length of the building, and nine individual Juliet balconies on the second floor. Most recently, a site visit saw construction nearly complete and a sales launch on the horizon.
